Gear Spindles
Modern steel and nonferrous mills require top performance from the power transmission equipment with higher loads and speeds being needed. Rolling Mill spindle couplings are components of vital importance, with regard to productivity objectives and high quality standard of the end product. Gear spindle coupling requirements:
- High torque capacity under minimum space condition.
- Suitability to endure high instantaneous peak loads, due to torque amplification, created by material entering or any disturbance during rolling process.
- Suitable to transmit the max torque with angular misalignment of 3” and over.
Gear Tooth Materials & Heat Treatments Any gear spindle coupling component, operating for the torque transmission, is manufactured from special alloy steel and is head treated. The section of a proper combination of steel and heat treatment, depending on the stressing level and the required operating life, can be:
TYPE A – X38CrMo V51 SGNGType x38CrMo V51 alloy tool steel core hardened and tempered with final heavy duty nitriding cycle Surface hardness > 1100[Hv] Gear teeth ground before and after nitriding
TYPE B – 18 NiCrMo5 CHGType I8NiCrMo5 alloy steel case hardened and tempered Surface hardness > 625[Hv] Gear teeth ground after case hardening and tempering
TYPE C – 31CrMo12 SGNType 31CrMo12 alloy steel hardened and tempered and special gas nitriding cycle for high depth Surface hardness >750[Hv] On request: gear teeth ground after gas nitriding.
TYPE D – 42CrMo4 NGNType 42CrMo4 alloy steel hardened and tempered and normal gas nitriding cycle for standard depth surface hardness >550 [Hv]
TYPE E – 42CrMo4 IHTType 42CrMo4 alloy steel hardened and tempered and full contour induction hardening Surface hardness >550 [Hv]
Gear Couplings:
We can perform a nitroxidation (N.O.) treatment on our standard GO-A gear couplings made of AISI 1045, when required. Besides limiting surface corrosion, this treatment improves surface hardness and wear resistance, and increases working gear teeth lifetime even in presence of high misalignments and rotation speeds.
Unless otherwise required, our gear couplings are properly packaged, according to their dimensions, weight, required type of the transport and storage. To prevent oxidation, the interface surfaces or usually protected by a wax film of TECTYL 506 EH. The raw (semi finished) and wide surfaces of spacer tubes are painted, after sandblasting, by one primer acrylic cocat and two final epoxy coats; this kind of painting can resist at temperatures up to 100-120 degrees centigrade.
Different types of coatings can transmit can be applied on demand.
The torque a gear coupling can transmit as well as its maximum operating speed change according to the total misalignment between the shafts to be connected.
The gear couplings must be selected according to the operating data (load and speed), the application, the nominal and max load capacities, the nominal speed, the static and dynamic misalignments and the max admitted bore.

The product range includes 26 sizes, divided according to the dimensions and the use, into: standard series with rotations from 180 mm up to 620 mm; tunnel series with rotations from 180 mm up to 620 mm; heavy duty series with rotations up to 1300 mm; HISHAFT® transmissions, the strengthen series suitable for standard rotations and increased performances and bearings lifetime. Using “Shot-peening” for journal crosses improves its torque capability for a more performing and long lasting product. Our universal shafts are able to fit the customer’s special requirements and design, in cooperation with all the industrial plant maintenance managers.
